چکیده

Erasure codes are an integral part of many distributed storage systems aimed at Big Data, since they provide high fault-tolerance for low overheads. However, traditional erasure codes are inefficient on reading stored data in degraded environments (when nodes might be unavailable), and on replenishing lost data (vital for long term resilience). Consequently, novel codes optimized to cope with distributed storage system nuances are vigorously being researched. In this paper, we take an engineering alternative, exploring the use of simple and mature techniques – juxtaposing a standard erasure code with RAID4 like parity. We carry out an analytical study to determine the efficacy of this approach over traditional as well as some novel codes. We build upon this study to design CORE, a general storage primitive that we integrate into HDFS. We benchmark this implementation in a proprietary cluster and in EC2. Our experiments show that compared to traditional erasure codes, CORE uses 50% less bandwidth and is up to 75% faster while recovering a single failed node, while the gains are respectively 15% and 60% for double node failures.

This paper investigates the use of redundancy and self repairing against node failures indistributed storage systems using a novel non-MDS erasure code. In replication method, accessto one replication node is adequate to reconstruct a lost node, while in MDS erasure codedsystems which are optimal in terms of redundancy-reliability tradeoff, a single node failure isrepaired after recovering the ...

A Non-MDS Erasure Code Scheme For Storage Applications

This paper investigates the use of redundancy and self repairing against node failures in distributed storage systems, using various strategies. In replication method, access to one replication node is sufficient to reconstruct a lost node, while in MDS erasure coded systems which are optimal in terms of redundancy-reliability tradeoff, a single node failure is repaired after recovering the ent...

Rack-Aware Regenerating Codes for Data Centers

Erasure coding is widely used for massive storage in data centers to achieve high fault tolerance and low storage redundancy. Since the cross-rack communication cost is often high, it is critical to design erasure codes that minimize the cross-rack repair bandwidth during failure repair. In this paper, we analyze the optimal trade-off between storage redundancy and cross-rack repair bandwidth s...

On repairing erasure coded data in an active-passive mixed storage network

Citation Oggier, F., & Datta, A. (2015). On repairing erasure coded data in an active-passive mixed storage network. International journal on information and coding theory, 3(1). Abstract: A major change has been recently witnessed in networked distributed storage systems (NDSS), with increased use of erasure codes in lieu of replication for realizing data redundancy. Yet, both the industry and...

Self-repairing Codes Local Repairability for Cheap & Fast Maintenance of Erasure Coded Data

Networked distributed data storage systems are essential to deal with the needs of storing massive volumes of data. Dependability of such a system relies on its fault tolerance (data should be available in case of node failures) as well as its maintainability (its ability to repair lost data to ensure redundancy replenishment over time). Erasure codes provide a storage efficient alternative to ...
